Microsoft has begun rolling out its AI-powered Copilot+ Recall feature, which periodically captures screenshots of users’ screens, to select users through its Windows Insider program. Originally paused after being labeled a “privacy nightmare,” the tool aims to help users quickly search their digital activity. Although Microsoft insists screenshots are stored locally and not shared, privacy advocates remain concerned, particularly about the capture of third-party information and the potential for misuse by malicious actors. The feature is opt-in and includes controls for pausing, deleting, and selecting which apps are tracked, but regulatory scrutiny persists, especially in the EU where launch is delayed until later in 2025.
