Google and Muon Space have launched the FireSat project, an advanced satellite constellation equipped with AI-powered infrared cameras to quickly detect and track wildfires worldwide. Unlike traditional satellite systems, FireSat can identify small fires, about the size of a classroom, within 20 minutes, and differentiate fires from similar heat sources using machine learning. The initiative, backed by nonprofits, academia, and a $13 million investment from Google.org, aims to provide early warnings, improve wildfire management, and build a global fire history database. With over 50 satellites planned to be operational by 2030, FireSat could revolutionize wildfire detection, potentially saving lives, property, and the environment.
