Google, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project, has created an artificial intelligence model named DolphinGemma to analyze and decode dolphin vocalizations. Using decades of dolphin sound recordings, the AI aims to categorize and uncover patterns in the complex language dolphins use, potentially paving the way for human–dolphin communication. Leveraging Google’s Pixel phone technology to capture clear audio, DolphinGemma will be released as an open-source tool for researchers worldwide. Initially trained on Atlantic spotted dolphins, the tool could be adapted to study other dolphin species as well, promising advancements in understanding animal intelligence and interspecies communication.
