The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its rules to allow films produced with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) to be eligible for Oscar nominations and awards. While the use of generative AI in filmmaking—such as voice cloning and digital enhancements—will not affect a film’s nomination chances, human involvement will still be a factor in final decisions. The decision comes amidst ongoing debates about AI’s impact on creative jobs, highlighted by recent Hollywood strikes and concerns from actors and writers about job security and misuse of their likenesses. While some embrace AI tools for speeding up or enhancing production, others in the industry remain skeptical about their quality and ethical implications.
