Microsoft has disclosed the development of an advanced AI system capable of diagnosing complex health conditions more accurately than human doctors. Led by Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI unit used challenging case studies from the New England Journal of Medicine to test the system, which paired with OpenAI’s o3 model to achieve an 80% success rate in diagnosis, compared to only 20% for doctors working independently. The AI utilizes a “diagnostic orchestrator” that emulates a panel of clinicians, efficiently ordering necessary tests and making diagnoses. While Microsoft claims this technology could usher in “medical superintelligence,” the company downplays the risk to medical jobs, emphasizing the human aspects of care that AI cannot replicate. The system is not yet ready for clinical deployment, requiring further testing on more common medical situations.
