Travis Kalanick, founder and former CEO of Uber, is reportedly seeking to acquire the US branch of Pony AI, a Chinese autonomous vehicle company. He is working alongside investors to fund the deal, and Uber may play a supportive role in the transaction. Pony AI, which went public in the previous year, had prepped its US operations for a potential sale or spinoff. If successful, the acquisition would mark Kalanick’s return to the self-driving car sector since his 2017 departure from Uber. Kalanick currently operates CloudKitchens but would maintain his position even if he acquires Pony AI. Meanwhile, Uber, led by Dara Khosrowshahi, shifted away from proprietary self-driving tech by selling its division to Aurora and partnering with firms like Waymo.
