Gloucestershire County Council, in collaboration with the UK Department for Transport, is developing a scheme to use artificial intelligence-powered cameras to assess the condition of rural roads, particularly unclassified routes lacking recent data. This technology aims to address concerns raised by councillors regarding gaps in road data since 2023, when previous manual assessments and mandatory reporting were discontinued. The AI-based camera system is expected to be implemented from 2026, providing critical information for motorists and local authorities tasked with road maintenance and safety.
