Meta (formerly Facebook) attempted to acquire the artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI prior to investing $14.3 billion into Scale AI, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Although negotiations between Meta and Perplexity ultimately did not lead to a deal—dissolved either mutually or by Perplexity’s choice—Meta went on to secure a substantial stake in Scale AI, continuing its aggressive push into AI technology amid stiff competition from OpenAI and Alphabet. The company has made significant offers to lure AI talent and also attempted to purchase Safe Superintelligence, further reflecting its determination to catch up with rivals in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
