Since Israel began strikes on Iran in June 2025, social media platforms have seen a surge in disinformation, much of it produced or enhanced using generative AI. BBC Verify uncovered dozens of widely shared fake videos and images exaggerating military actions by both sides, with some posts amassing millions of views. These include AI-created clips of attacks and outdated footage misrepresented as recent, spreading quickly thanks to so-called “super-spreader” accounts seeking profit or influence. Official sources and ordinary users alike have shared fakes, while social platforms struggle to curb the trend. The incident highlights the use of AI at unprecedented scale for misinformation during armed conflict—amplifying political narratives and complicating public understanding.
