Netflix has made its first foray into using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to create visual effects, deploying the technology to produce a key scene in the new Argentine sci-fi series, The Eternaut. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos hailed the move as a breakthrough, noting it enabled Netflix to deliver high-quality visuals faster and at a fraction of traditional costs, helping smaller-budget productions achieve blockbuster effects. The development comes amid industry unease over AI’s impact on creative labor and calls for tighter regulation, particularly following the Hollywood strikes of 2023. While some experts welcome the democratization of high-end production, others warn of job risks and the erosion of craftsmanship. Netflix, meanwhile, celebrated a strong quarterly financial performance, buoyed by hit series such as Squid Game, and signaled that AI-powered content creation is set to become mainstream.
