In a melding of innovation and artistry reminiscent of science fiction, Oxford-based creator Aidan Meller has unveiled Ai-Da, described as the world’s first ultra-realistic robot artist. Recently showcasing a portrait of King Charles III at the United Nations’ AI for Good Global Summit, Ai-Da offers not only technical prowess—using AI algorithms and robotic dexterity to paint original works—but also challenges viewers to interrogate the relationship between humans, machines, and creativity itself. Meller, reflecting on six years of collaboration with Ai-Da, notes the project raises profound questions about human identity and our evolving rapport with technology. Previous works include portraits of Alan Turing and Queen Elizabeth II, underscoring Ai-Da’s growing prominence at the intersection of art, technology, and public discourse.
