An overwhelming majority of college faculty say artificial intelligence is eroding student skills and encouraging overreliance on technology, according to a new survey by the American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon University’s Imagining the Digital Future Center. Of 1,057 professors polled, 95% said AI will make students too dependent on the technology; 90% expect declines in critical thinking and 83% foresee shorter attention spans. Seventy-eight percent reported more cheating since AI tools became widely available, and nearly three-quarters said AI could undermine the integrity and value of degrees. Though the non-scientific survey shows faculty split on adopting AI in the classroom, its authors urge colleges to invest in AI literacy and redesign teaching and assessment to protect academic standards while preparing students for an AI-shaped labor market.
