Bill Gates warned that rapidly advancing artificial intelligence could reshape the U.S. labor market within a decade, displacing millions of workers across white- and blue-collar roles. In a lengthy essay, the Microsoft co-founder said improving AI reasoning and near error-free performance will give companies strong incentives to automate tasks in fields from law and software to manufacturing and construction. Gates urged policymakers to move quickly, proposing measures such as taxing AI tokens and robots to slow employer incentives to replace people, and reserving certain roles—like caregiving—for humans. He cautioned that the biggest burden will fall on younger and lower-wage workers and called for a policy framework to manage an approaching period of social, political and economic upheaval driven by AI.
