Toner emphasized that US actions undermining scientific research and cutting off foreign talent may give China an advantage in developing advanced AI. She also discussed the disruptive impact of generative AI on the job market, questioned which business models would dominate in the AI sector, and warned about the risks of gradually ceding too much control to AI systems. Toner stressed the societal benefits of AI when used responsibly, such as in science and road safety, but cautioned against rushing deployment without adequate safeguards.
