A senior Goldman Sachs partner warned that Wall Street’s rapid embrace of artificial intelligence could weaken fundamental reasoning skills among junior bankers and traders. Chris Churchman, who oversees Goldman’s Marquee platform, said on the firm’s podcast that banks risk eroding the apprenticeship model if routine analytical work is ceded to algorithms, diminishing the tacit knowledge that turns novices into seasoned risk takers. He added that the firm has yet to settle on a durable balance between automation and human oversight, especially for high-stakes decisions. Churchman also flagged accuracy and auditability as chief hurdles for generative AI in institutional finance, noting that while consumer chatbots accept occasional errors, banks cannot. For now, Goldman’s Marquee AI capabilities remain internal as the firm refines controls and reliability.
