India opens AI Impact Summit, attracting world leaders and tech titans

India kicked off a five-day AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, positioning itself as a bridge between advanced economies and the Global South on questions of artificial-intelligence governance and deployment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the event, which is expected to draw 250,000 attendees, including heads of state such as France’s Emmanuel Macron and Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and tech leaders from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Qualcomm. Organizers aim to produce a nonbinding “New Delhi Declaration” centered on “people, progress, planet,” highlighting inclusive growth and low-cost, at-scale digital infrastructure. The opening day was marred by long lines, crowding and confusion over security protocols, prompting complaints from delegates and startup founders. As governments weigh safety guardrails against innovation, India seeks greater investment and international partnerships while signaling that AI policy should foster development without stifling the industry.
