Musk Says China Is the Leading AI Challenger, Reviving His 2011 Warning as SpaceX Encounters a New Reusable-Rocket Rival

Elon Musk cast China as the United States’ toughest challenger in artificial intelligence, reiterating a warning he made in 2011 that Beijing would emerge as SpaceX’s most consequential rival in rocketry. The comments arrive as China’s commercial space sector notches advances in reusability: private firm LandSpace recently recovered the first stage of its Zhuque-3 orbital rocket, while a Long March 10B booster was retrieved at sea in July—steps that narrow the technology gap with SpaceX’s Falcon 9. In AI, Stanford’s 2026 AI Index finds the performance gap between top U.S. and Chinese models has largely closed, even as the U.S. outpaces China in model output and private funding. China leads in publications, citations and patents, underscoring a sharpening competition across two strategic arenas—space launch and AI—where cost, capability and scale could redefine technological leadership.
