The U.S. and China are exploring a new “notification mechanism” for AI-related incidents with national-security implications, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said after talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York. The discussions, described by Bessent as “successful,” also touched on operational steps to identify potential tariff reductions via a Board of Trade process, with a truce in their tariff war set to expire Nov. 10. Beijing’s Xinhua said both sides held “candid, in-depth and constructive” exchanges on key economic and trade issues, including AI. The initiative comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI risks and as President Trump and President Xi prepare to meet in Washington later this week, with Trump emphasizing the need to maintain U.S. leadership in the technology.
