Japan is racing to embed AI into physical systems as a shrinking workforce forces companies to automate or fall behind. The government aims to build a domestic “physical AI” sector and capture 30% of the global market by 2040, leveraging a long-held edge in industrial robotics—where Japanese makers controlled roughly 70% of the market in 2022. With working-age Japanese now just 59.6% of the population and projected to decline by about 15 million over two decades, investment is shifting from trials to paid deployments across factories, warehouses and infrastructure. Tokyo has earmarked about $6.3 billion to strengthen core AI and accelerate real-world rollouts, while firms such as Mujin, WHILL and Terra Drone push full-stack and orchestration platforms that blend hardware, software and operational data. Executives say the competitive frontier is moving from components to system-level integration and continuous improvement, as Japan’s corporates partner with startups to scale automation reliably. The approach contrasts with U.S. software-led and China’s full-stack sprints, betting Japan’s precision hardware plus embedded AI will secure enduring supply-chain and deployment advantages.
