As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, concerns are intensifying over the use of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), often dubbed ‘killer robots’. The United Nations, NGOs, and prominent advocates warn that AI-driven drones and robotics are now shaping modern warfare, as notably seen in Ukraine, where both sides deploy weaponized drones. With technology outpacing policy, calls for global regulation and even bans on fully autonomous weapons systems are growing. Critics cite serious risks, including faulty AI judgment, embedded bias, accountability gaps for war crimes, and deep ethical issues around machines making life-and-death decisions. Despite ongoing negotiations at the UN and mounting international agreement on the dangers, no consensus exists yet on binding rules, though momentum is building toward possible regulation or a ban by 2026.
