A comprehensive study by the National Bureau of Economic Research has found that despite widespread adoption of AI chatbots in over 7,000 workplaces, their impact on employee earnings and recorded working hours is negligible. Drawing on data from Denmark—where detailed employment records are available—researchers observed only a minor 3% time savings for employees, with limited productivity gains translating to higher pay. The findings contradict media hype about AI-driven workplace transformation, highlighting significant barriers in real-world implementation, such as insufficient employer support, limited incentives for workers, and organizational inertia. The study suggests that broader and more substantial productivity increases from AI may require time, extensive training, and organizational adjustments.
