Joelle Pineau, Meta’s vice president for AI research, has announced her departure from the company at the end of May after eight years. Pineau, notable for championing Meta’s open-source AI strategy and leading efforts around large language models like Llama, leaves as competition in AI intensifies. No replacement has been named. The move comes ahead of Meta’s inaugural LlamaCon AI conference. Pineau, based in Montreal, took over leadership of Meta’s AI research division in 2023 and has played a central role in shaping its public AI initiatives.
