Anthropic is pressing ahead with a high-profile initial public offering even as U.S. voters registered sharp discontent with artificial intelligence and the data centers that power it. In midterm elections, local measures tied to data centers failed in 40 of 41 cases, and exit polls indicated more than half of voters weighed AI facilities as a crucial factor in congressional choices. Against a choppy market backdrop—the Nasdaq just logged its steepest drop in 19 months—Anthropic is said to be targeting a valuation of $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion, down from earlier talk of $2 trillion. The company disclosed roughly $895.4 billion in compute and infrastructure commitments, underscoring the capital intensity now drawing public scrutiny over energy, environmental and utility-bill impacts. While going public could bring transparency and brand lift, it will also put Anthropic in the center of a heated policy and community debate at a moment of eroding trust in Big Tech.
