U.S. prosecutors charged three people with orchestrating an AI-enabled impersonation scheme that siphoned roughly $129 million from companies worldwide. Over 18 months, the defendants allegedly used voice- and video-cloning tools to pose as CEOs and outside counsel, directing corporate accounting staff to wire funds that were later laundered through cryptocurrency. Targets ranged from hospital systems to financial firms in several states and abroad. The trio, arrested between June and September, face wire-fraud, aggravated identity-theft and money-laundering counts; one defendant previously pleaded guilty to bank-fraud conspiracy in 2008. The FBI said the case underscores how criminals are weaponizing emerging technologies at scale.
