The University of Vermont has introduced CatGPT, a generative AI chatbot uniquely trained on Vermont folklore, local wisdom, and historical records. Unlike typical AI models that draw from global internet data, CatGPT’s knowledge comes exclusively from Vermont-centric sources like town meeting notes, regional sayings, and local debates. Designed to provide advice with a characteristically Vermont perspective, the tool stands out for its quirky, practical, and sometimes humorous approach to topics ranging from climate to economics. Intended as both a research aid and a reflection of regional identity, CatGPT will first be available to the UVM community, with plans for broader access after further testing.
