AI Is Math, Not Emotion

Perplexity AI, Backed by Bezos, Makes Unexpected $34.5 Billion Offer for Google Chrome

A growing number of tech companies are making bold claims about “empathetic AI” that can understand, respond to, and even care about human feelings. The marketing is seductive: who would not want a machine that listens, comforts, or encourages us? But the truth is simple: AI does not feel, does not care, cannot suffer, and cannot love.

To see this clearly, strip away the glossy marketing and look at what AI really is. AI is nothing more than vast tables of numbers, giant spreadsheets of probabilities. When you type a message into a chatbot, it does not “understand” you the way a friend does. It scans patterns in your words, compares them to billions of past examples, and then predicts which word is most likely to come next. That is calculation, not compassion.

Take an example. If you tell an AI, “I lost my mother,” it might respond with “I’m so sorry for your loss.” It sounds caring, but there is no grief behind those words. The program has simply learned that people often follow such statements with condolences. It is no different from a phrasebook that tells you what to say in a given situation.

Or think about music. AI can generate a song that resembles a love ballad. It can match the chord progressions, the tempo, even the lyrics of heartbreak. But it has never loved, never longed, never sat awake at night with tears in its eyes. It is only rearranging patterns from millions of songs it has processed.

Or take images. AI can create a picture of a smiling family gathered at a dinner table. Every detail may look warm and inviting, but the AI has never shared a meal, never laughed at a joke, never felt the comfort of belonging. It is only pixels arranged to imitate what real life looks like.

This is the essence of AI: formulas, probabilities, and pattern recognition at scale. Feed it massive amounts of data, and it can statistically predict what word, image, or action is likely to come next. That is powerful, but it is not human. Machines are tools, not minds. They simulate understanding by analyzing patterns in speech, tone, or expression, but they do not experience empathy. A chatbot that “sounds compassionate” is simply following probability distributions, not reaching into a well of humanity. Confusing math with humanity is ignorance at its peak, and it leads us down a dangerous path of misplaced trust.

Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of Bumble, is betting that artificial intelligence can become “the world’s smartest and most emotionally intelligent matchmaker.” She imagines algorithms that know us better than we know ourselves and can even weigh the emotional scars of our past relationships to pick our future partners. It may be a compelling story, but it is not reality. Relationships are built on serendipity, chemistry, and imperfections that no algorithm can quantify. What this vision really sells is an illusion, the promise that math can replace intuition.

The danger is not that machines will become too human. The danger is that humans will forget the difference. If we start outsourcing emotional judgment such as how to comfort a child, how to console a grieving family, or how to choose a partner, to algorithms, we degrade what makes us human.

Love is not a dataset or a pattern to be optimized. It is messy, irrational, inexplicable, and that is precisely why it is real.
